Так как нас второй раз занесло на Родос, мы решили не ограничиваться прогулкой по городу, а сходить в аквариум, который приметили еще в прошлый заход в порт. Аквариум расположен на самой северной оконечности острова. Если я не ошибаюсь, это первая биологическая станция, построенная на Додеканских островах с целью изучения местного подводного мира и развития рыболовства.
Здание строилось итальянцами (Родос не всегда был греческим островом), поэтому в нем прослеживаются характерные для начала XX века модерновые черты и оно сильно выделяется на фоне классических греческих построек. Если учесть, что вокруг здания ничего нет (визуально), то даже такая крошечная станция становится аркой архитектурной доминантой, хотя по сути в нем всего 2 этажа. Когда в 1947 году остров вновь отошел грекам, новые руководители исследовательского института ничего не меняли и не перестраивали.
Аквариум небольшой, на верхнем этаже (он же первый, в уровень с землей) расположен небольшой музей. В нем есть чучела рыб, разные виды ракушек и много мелких экспонатов. Детям понравится контактный бассейн с неагрессивными животными, которым не вредит человеческое внимание. Можно потрогать морскую звезду, какого-то рака, водоросли. Это все обладает разной текстурой и формой, очень интересно. Конечно, лучше не злоупотреблять, так как это все-таки живые существа.
Рядом есть медиазона с видеофильмами об освоении и изучения моря, о том, чем отличается Эгейское море от Средиземного, какие еще моря есть поблизости. Так же рассказывается, как именно близость моря влияла на историю острова и развитие мореходства в Греции.
Некоторые экспонаты, конечно, жуткие, но после Кунсткамеры терпимо, ведь это все не люди. Экспозиция очень скромная, можно все осмотреть меньше, чем за час. Так же обидно, что часть табличек не продублирована на английский язык, а греческий я не знаю. Но в аквариуме есть бесплатный wi-fi, поэтому можно воспользоваться переводчиком.
На нижнем этаже (это уже ниже уровня моря, считай под водой) располагаются резервуары с живыми морскими обитателями и растениями. Там темно, есть слабая подсветка, чтобы было лучше видно рыб. Все-таки это мы пришли смотреть на них, а не им показывают нас.
Нахождение ниже уровня моря ощущается еще и потому, что с потолка постоянно что-то капает, где-то что-то журчит и кажется, будто подвал вот-вот затопит. Но нет, видно, что здание крепкое и тут все продумано.
Поговаривают, что еще тут есть бассейн для тюленей, но посетителей в него не пускают. Я привыкла к тому, что ластоногие это северные жители (с чего я это взяла? да с того, что видела до этого только ладожских, балтийских и онежских нерпочек, потому что живу на севере), но ведь оказывается они есть и в теплых морях. Вряд ли средиземноморских тюленей тоже держат в подвале, так что скорее всего они находятся где-то отдельно, а посетителей не пускают, чтобы не мешать застенчивым зверятам.
Самые зрелищные, конечно, это крупные рыбы. Они контактные, интересуются тобой и их хорошо видно. Но на самом деле аквариумов немного, станция очень маленькая. Прям как аквариум в Триесте на бывшем рыбном рынке. Но все равно очень интересно посмотреть на животных совсем другой климатической зоны.
На то, чтобы все посмотреть можно заложить не более двух часов. Базовая цена взрослого билета 6 евро, льготный стоит 4 евро, а дети до 5 лет проходят бесплатно. Добраться можно пешком или на автобусе. Пешком, на мой взгляд, быстрее будет, заодно прогуляетесь по пляжу. За целый день прогулки по острову я не увидела ни одного автобуса на остановке.
